Yesterday, the European Parliament has taken a landmark decision by voting in favour of a strong and binding law to tackle the deadly trade in conflict minerals. This is a step further toward embedding companies’ responsibility to act with due diligence into law.

This vote echoes recent developments. A few weeks ago, a parliamentary motion urged for the creation of “a legal obligation of due diligence for EU companies outsourcing production to third countries, including measures to secure traceability and transparency”. In France, the parliament voted for a mandatory duty of vigilance.

Today’s vote determines the position with which the European Parliament enters into negotiations with Member States and Commission to find an agreement on the law.

It is high time lawmakers take action to ensure companies respect the rights of communities and workers, and address adverse impacts that they cause or contribute to.
