The European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) is hosting an in-person breakfast side event during the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva on 26 November 2024. Titled “CSDDD Explained: Practical insights for global rightsholders,” this session will explore the transformative potential of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), offering tools to rightsholders, civil society organisations, and trade unions to address corporate abuse of human and environmental rights.
What to expect
This event aims to:
- Present key insights on how the CSDDD can be used by rightsholders globally.
- Examine practical measures the Directive offers to ensure that companies are held accountable for human rights and environmental breaches.
- Outline how civil society organisations can interact with national supervisory authorities to ensure they consistently monitor and enforce the CSDDD through administrative tools.
- Define the central role of civil society organisations in ensuring rightsholders’ claims are brought to court when harm has occurred.
- Set up a space for open discussion and knowledge exchange on expected opportunities and challenges introduced by the CSDDD.
Speakers will cover the tools available under the CSDDD, including mechanisms for stakeholder engagement, filing complaints, and accessing justice. These practical insights wish to prepare civil society actors inside and outside the EU to use the CSDDD to its fullest potential when defending human and environmental rights from corporate abuse.
